and would apply to<strong> key groceries \u2013 such as eggs, bread, and milk <\/strong>&#8211; according to retail industry sources with knowledge of the plans.<\/p>\n<p>In return, the <strong>government has said it would offer \u201cincentives\u201d to the supermarkets<\/strong>, which the people said could include easing packaging policies and potentially delaying costly changes to rules around healthy food.<\/p>\n<p>As one may well expect, <strong>supermarkets are understood to be strongly opposed to the plans<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The Treasury has declined to comment.<\/p>\n<p>The proposals come as Sir Keir Starmer\u2019s government is battling to address public concern over the cost of living.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Scottish retailers<\/strong> recently condemned a\u00a0<a data-trackable=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/79ccfe5d-315b-44b2-99b1-1f04986dc4c4?syn-25a6b1a6=1\" title=\"\">similar policy by the Scottish National Party<\/a>\u00a0as <strong>a \u201c1970s-style\u201d gimmick<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>One person close to a supermarket said the Treasury\u2019s initiative was<strong> \u201ca rubbish, knee-jerk reaction to the SNP\u201d.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>UK food inflation rose to 3.7 per cent in April<\/strong>, and the foreign secretary, Yvette Cooper, has warned the world is \u201csleepwalking into a global food crisis\u201d, with the Middle East war throttling supply chains.<\/p>\n<p>And in line with the magical thinking, the <strong>Treasury has also told supermarkets that it would like guarantees that British farmers would not lose income from shop price caps<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><a data-image-external-href=\"\" data-image-href=\"\/s3\/files\/inline-images\/ftcms8a7667d0-0d08-42ec-a556-58d.jpg?itok=_OTBvgAd\" data-link-option=\"0\" href=\"https:\/\/cms.zerohedge.com\/s3\/files\/inline-images\/ftcms8a7667d0-0d08-42ec-a556-58d.jpg?itok=_OTBvgAd\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-entity-type=\"file\" data-entity-uuid=\"f05e4d72-2edf-429d-9630-2c1f6d08682c\" data-responsive-image-style=\"inline_images\" height=\"281\" width=\"500\" class=\"inline-images image-style-inline-images\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.zerohedge.com\/s3fs-public\/styles\/inline_image_mobile\/public\/inline-images\/ftcms8a7667d0-0d08-42ec-a556-58d.jpg?itok=_OTBvgAd\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Former Brexit minister Lord Frost weighed in on social media platform X, calling the proposal &#8220;remarkable (and remarkably bad) if true.<\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;There are certainly plenty of <strong>people in this govt whose understanding of economics is so poor<\/strong> that they might consider it a good idea.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>SNP leader John Swinney has defended his party&#8217;s approach, arguing he faces a &#8220;public health responsibility&#8221;
