A “Rubbish, Knee-Jerk Reaction”: UK Treasury Pushes Food Price Caps As Inflation Re-Accelerates<\/span><\/p>\n

UK supermarkets are being urged by the government to limit food prices<\/strong> in return for easing regulations.<\/p>\n

As first reported by The Financial Times<\/a>, the price caps are ‘voluntary’ and would apply to key groceries \u2013 such as eggs, bread, and milk <\/strong>– according to retail industry sources with knowledge of the plans.<\/p>\n

In return, the government has said it would offer \u201cincentives\u201d to the supermarkets<\/strong>, which the people said could include easing packaging policies and potentially delaying costly changes to rules around healthy food.<\/p>\n

As one may well expect, supermarkets are understood to be strongly opposed to the plans<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The Treasury has declined to comment.<\/p>\n

The proposals come as Sir Keir Starmer\u2019s government is battling to address public concern over the cost of living.<\/p>\n

Scottish retailers<\/strong> recently condemned a\u00a0similar policy by the Scottish National Party<\/a>\u00a0as a \u201c1970s-style\u201d gimmick<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

One person close to a supermarket said the Treasury\u2019s initiative was \u201ca rubbish, knee-jerk reaction to the SNP\u201d.<\/strong><\/p>\n

UK food inflation rose to 3.7 per cent in April<\/strong>, and the foreign secretary, Yvette Cooper, has warned the world is \u201csleepwalking into a global food crisis\u201d, with the Middle East war throttling supply chains.<\/p>\n

And in line with the magical thinking, the Treasury has also told supermarkets that it would like guarantees that British farmers would not lose income from shop price caps<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Former Brexit minister Lord Frost weighed in on social media platform X, calling the proposal “remarkable (and remarkably bad) if true.<\/p>\n

“There are certainly plenty of people in this govt whose understanding of economics is so poor<\/strong> that they might consider it a good idea.”<\/em><\/p>\n

SNP leader John Swinney has defended his party’s approach, arguing he faces a “public health responsibility” to ensure affordable nutrition for people “struggling to afford a very basic shop.”<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is a completely ill-thought-out, last-minute idea\u2009.\u2009.\u2009.\u2009The idea that the government can set price better than the market is for the birds,\u201d <\/strong><\/em>one person familiar with the discussions told the FT<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
