{"id":603451,"date":"2026-05-18T09:45:00","date_gmt":"2026-05-18T09:45:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/buglecall.org\/?p=603451"},"modified":"2026-05-18T09:45:00","modified_gmt":"2026-05-18T09:45:00","slug":"behind-turkeys-gold-sales-the-biggest-ever-plunge-in-foreign-reserves-3","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/buglecall.org\/?p=603451","title":{"rendered":"Behind Turkey&#8217;s Gold Sales: The Biggest Ever Plunge In Foreign Reserves"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span class=\"field field--name-title field--type-string field--label-hidden\">Behind Turkey&#8217;s Gold Sales: The Biggest Ever Plunge In Foreign Reserves<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"clearfix text-formatted field field--name-body field--type-text-with-summary field--label-hidden field__item\">\n<p>Shortly after the Iran war started, with gold unexpectedly tumbling, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zerohedge.com\/precious-metals\/turkey-dumped-58-tons-gold-after-iran-war-started\">we showed <\/a>that the reason behind gold&#8217;s paradoxical move &#8211; after all, the precious metal has traditionally been a store of value in times of geopolitical stress &#8211; was the furious liquidation of gold by emerging markets, in this case Turkey, scrambling to obtain reserve dry powder so Ankara could cover soaring costs of energy imports.<\/p>\n<p><a data-image-external-href=\"\" data-image-href=\"\/s3\/files\/inline-images\/turkey%20gold%20sales.jpg?itok=IVuwOX73\" data-link-option=\"0\" href=\"https:\/\/cms.zerohedge.com\/s3\/files\/inline-images\/turkey%20gold%20sales.jpg?itok=IVuwOX73\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" data-entity-type=\"file\" data-entity-uuid=\"e3309159-265c-4693-8db5-2bf8cdf72a12\" data-responsive-image-style=\"inline_images\" height=\"281\" width=\"500\" class=\"inline-images image-style-inline-images\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.zerohedge.com\/s3fs-public\/styles\/inline_image_mobile\/public\/inline-images\/turkey%20gold%20sales.jpg?itok=IVuwOX73\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>And indeed, the latest central bank data showed that\u00a0<strong>Turkey\u2019s foreign reserves had their biggest monthly decline on record in March, <\/strong>as the Iran war triggered global selloffs in emerging market assets and strained the lira.<\/p>\n<p>According to balance-of-payments data released on Wednesday, <strong>Turkey&#8217;s official reserves cratered by $43.4 billion in March.\u00a0Part of the decline reflected state intervention to offset portfolio outflows<\/strong>.\u00a0The current-account deficit, meanwhile, widened to $9.7 billion in March from $7.3 billion in February as a result of soaring commodity prices.<\/p>\n<p><a data-image-external-href=\"\" data-image-href=\"\/s3\/files\/inline-images\/turkish%20reserves%20plunge.jpg?itok=kDOopRuO\" data-link-option=\"0\" href=\"https:\/\/cms.zerohedge.com\/s3\/files\/inline-images\/turkish%20reserves%20plunge.jpg?itok=kDOopRuO\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-entity-type=\"file\" data-entity-uuid=\"1bb33d55-4b64-4cee-971e-45c5b42f3b55\" data-responsive-image-style=\"inline_images\" height=\"261\" width=\"500\" class=\"inline-images image-style-inline-images\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.zerohedge.com\/s3fs-public\/styles\/inline_image_mobile\/public\/inline-images\/turkish%20reserves%20plunge.jpg?itok=kDOopRuO\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>A major energy importer, Turkey has been hit hard by higher oil and gas prices caused by the effective closing of the Strait of Hormuz and the resulting disruptions to world supplies of crude and refined products. Meanwhile, global banks have started changing their formerly favorable outlook on the lira, citing the exploding current-account deficit.
