That didn\u2019t stop NBC News from promoting a story from the Associated Press about Mexican American business owners and \u201cinclusion,\u201d in contrast to President Donald Trump and \u201ca great deal of fear in Latino communities.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Under a subheading of \u201cA testament to Mexican resilience,\u201d the <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/cinco-de-mayo-mexican-american-business-742fe0955716683e65e52be055adfe18\">report<\/a> insisted, \u201cSince returning to the White House in 2025, President Donald Trump has continued to label Mexican immigrants as criminals and gang members, and Latino communities have been a target of his hard-line immigration tactics.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMemes shared from official White House social media accounts perpetuate negative stereotypes about Latinos, while a federally led English-only initiative and ban on diversity, equity, and inclusion programs all seem to target communities of color,\u201d continued the AP\u2019s Fernanda Figueroa. \u201cAltogether, it\u2019s generated a great deal of fear in Latino communities.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">Happy Cinco de Mayo to all who celebrate! <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/gfTriN75Fk\">pic.twitter.com\/gfTriN75Fk<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 The White House (@WhiteHouse) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/WhiteHouse\/status\/2051678505805496589?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">May 5, 2026<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The narrative was tacked onto the promotion of Mexican restaurants \u2014 and other businesses \u2014 using the celebration to \u201creclaim Cinco de Mayo in the U.S. \u2014 moving away from a flattening of Mexican culture toward highlighting history and community,\u201d with the continued sales of Mexican food, beer, margaritas, and tequila.<\/p>\n<p>Embedded in the story was a self-refuting point about \u201cinclusion\u201d as the AP shared data from the National Restaurant Association that assessed Hispanic-owned firms operate roughly 18% of all restaurant businesses in America as of April.<\/p>\n<p>Regarding the actual significance of the day, the report touted the 1862 \u201ctriumph over much larger French troops,\u201d during the Battle of Puebla of the Second Franco-Mexican War, \u201cwho were better-equipped,\u201d styling it an \u201cenormous emotional boost for Mexican soldiers led by Gen. Ignacio Zaragoza.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn Mexico, historical reenactments are held annually in the central city of Puebla to commemorate the victory. Participants dress as Mexican and French troops and as Zacapoaxtlas \u2014 the Indigenous and farmer contingent that helped Mexican troops win,\u201d wrote Figueroa. \u201cIn the U.S., May 5 is seen as a day to celebrate Mexican American culture, stretching back to the 1800s in California. Festivities typically include parades, street food, block parties, mariachi competitions, and baile.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The assertion was refuted on social media as commenters shared anecdotes about their own experiences in Hispanic communities and Mexico alike. Arguing that celebrations were limited to the town of Puebla, where the battle actually occurred, many pointed to marketers as responsible for promoting Cinco de Mayo \u2014 often confused for Mexican Independence Day \u2014 because Dieciseis de Septiembre \u201cwas too hard for gringos to pronounce.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>All told, the effort was akin to those who shifted Juneteenth from a Texas commemoration to a federal holiday, as opposed to what was actually at play: \u201cCinco de Mayo is an American holiday where White people drink margaritas and wear sombreros.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">Lived in Houston for 25 years.
