Some Democrats fear Harris picked the wrong race,\u201d reads a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/05\/03\/us\/politics\/kamala-harris-california-governor-democrats.html\">headline<\/a> from the New York Times as the Gray Lady presented thoughts on the question \u201cShould Kamala Harris be running for California governor?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Under the \u201crather grim\u201d possibility that California\u2019s jungle primary could result in Democrats failing to make the general election, the report first cited \u201cThe View\u201d co-host Sunny Hostin, who recently petitioned former President Joe Biden\u2019s border czar to give running her home state a second look.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCalifornia, it\u2019s like running a country,\u201d said the talk show personality. \u201cI know that she\u2019s talked about being president \u2014 I don\u2019t know if that\u2019s the right position for her \u2014 but my goodness, she certainly knows California.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Likewise, Third Way co-Founder Matt Bennett told the newspaper, \u201cShe would have been good at it, and it would have been a good job for her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt would have been good for Democrats everywhere,\u201d he noted in contrast to her potential third bid for the presidency, \u201cwith a real burden\u201d of her record. \u201cIt\u2019s conceivable that she could craft a message, but she\u2019s got a lot of explaining to do.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Last week, NOTUS reporter Daniella Diaz cited several Democrats speaking out on the 2028 presidential election that included \u201creal concerns\u201d about Harris topping the ticket again after her 2024 failure.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI would have been most enthusiastic had she looked at the governor\u2019s race \u2026 I don\u2019t think I\u2019m alone in this view, that I would have real concerns about her being the nominee,\u201d said one House Democrat while Harris supporter Louisiana Rep. Troy Carter (D) hedged, \u201cI can\u2019t support anybody right now \u2026 It\u2019s way too early. It felt like it was an easy win and an easy walk into the governor\u2019s mansion here,\u201d political consultant Lara Bergthold told the Times. \u201cI get the feeling that she wants to play on the national stage.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While mail-in voting begins this week, Democratic voters have been urged to wait to cast a vote until polling shows a clear frontrunner to avoid spoilers leading to an all Republican general election for the June 2 primary.
