Elizabeth Warren.<\/p>\n<p>Three years ago, Warren demanded that the then-Biden administration block JetBlue from buying and taking over Spirit Airlines for $3.8 billion.<\/p>\n<p>The senator at the time <a href=\"https:\/\/www.warren.senate.gov\/imo\/media\/doc\/2022.09.15%20Letter%20to%20DOT%20re%20merger%20authority%20and%20Spirit-JetBlue.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">submitted a letter<\/a> to then-Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg arguing that the responsible decision was to block JetBlue from merging with Spirit Airlines.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">We don\u2019t need yet another big merger in the already highly consolidated airline industry. When airlines get bigger, passengers face higher prices, more delays &amp; fewer choices. I\u2019m urging <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/USDOT?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@USDOT<\/a> to use its authority to block mergers that harm competition.<a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/Zs3PW8NHhg\">https:\/\/t.co\/Zs3PW8NHhg<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Elizabeth Warren (@SenWarren) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/SenWarren\/status\/1571153513295810560?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">September 17, 2022<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>\u201cDOT has the statutory authority to block mergers that it determines are inconsistent with the public interest at the agency level without having to go to court \u2013 a significant advantage over DOJ \u2013 and you have an enormous opportunity to protect consumers nationwide by using this authority aggressively,\u201d she wrote.<\/p>\n<p>She added that a merger would lead to higher fares.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAccording to Spirit\u2019s own analysis, which it presented to its shareholders in a bid to prevent a hostile JetBlue merger from being approved, \u2018a JetBlue transaction would substantially raise fares for consumers,\u201d she explained.<\/p>\n<p>She also fretted that allowing Spirit to continue would mean its poor performance metrics would be allowed to continue.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSpirit is the nation\u2019s worst airline across a range of operational metrics,\u201d she wrote. \u201cIt often has the highest rate of flight cancellations and lowest on-time rate of any marketing carrier.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFlight attendants unions have accused Spirit of being grossly unprepared to handle weather-related cancellation events, which have often resulted in \u2018operational meltdowns\u2019 that left passengers and workers \u2018stranded without answers.\u2019 Spirit\u2019s practices are sparking operational concerns, and a merger with JetBlue could expand those practices to more planes and more travelers,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n<p>Six months after the letter was submitted, the Biden Department of Justice sued to block the merger. Following a lengthy trial, the deal was permanently blocked by a judge in January of 2024.<\/p>\n<p>Warren celebrated the judge\u2019s decision:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">This anticompetitive airline deal would have increased prices and reduced options for flyers. We are proud of the impact of our ultra-low-cost model on the industry over the last 34 years and had hoped to serve our Guests for many years to come,\u201d the announcement continued.<\/p>\n<p>According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2026\/05\/02\/business\/spirit-to-halt-all-flights\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">CNN<\/a>, the airline shutting down \u201cwill put 17,000 workers out of a job, including 14,000 Spirit employees and thousands of contractors and other people whose jobs depend on Spirit.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As noted up top, many now blame Warren.<\/p>\n<p>Look:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-conversation=\"none\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">Congrats on Spirit Airlines closing.
