{"id":594235,"date":"2026-04-30T22:20:00","date_gmt":"2026-04-30T22:20:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/buglecall.org\/?p=594235"},"modified":"2026-04-30T22:20:00","modified_gmt":"2026-04-30T22:20:00","slug":"25-billion-hegseth-accused-of-lowballing-cost-of-iran-war","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/buglecall.org\/?p=594235","title":{"rendered":"$25 Billion: Hegseth Accused Of Lowballing Cost Of Iran War"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span class=\"field field--name-title field--type-string field--label-hidden\">$25 Billion: Hegseth Accused Of Lowballing Cost Of Iran War<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"clearfix text-formatted field field--name-body field--type-text-with-summary field--label-hidden field__item\">\n<p>Pentagon chief Pete Hegseth has been in a very public spat and back-and-forth with Congressional Democrats over the Trump administration&#8217;s\u00a0$1.5 trillion Pentagon budget request, as well as over Iran war strategy and mounting costs.<\/p>\n<p>Hegseth has turned to some classic wartime fearmongering: <strong>&#8220;What is it worth to ensure that Iran never gets a nuclear weapon?&#8221;<\/strong> &#8211; he posed to members of Congress when pressed in a hearing.<\/p>\n<p>Hegseth called the <strong>&#8220;reckless, feckless, and defeatist words of congressional Democrats&#8221;<\/strong> the United States&#8217; greatest adversary. At a moment Operation Epic Fury is about to reach 60-days on Friday, he&#8217;s still insisting that this is not a &#8216;forever war&#8217; with an open-ended timetable.<\/p>\n<p>One figure to come out of the latest Congressional hearings this week is a <strong>$25 billion total Iran war price tag<\/strong>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/responsiblestatecraft.org\/cost-of-war-iran\/\">thus far<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><em>A Pentagon official\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=cDcvMkjAGUs\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\"><u>told<\/u><\/a>\u00a0the House Armed Services Committee Wednesday that the war in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/responsiblestatecraft.org\/tag\/iran\/\">Iran<\/a>\u00a0cost the United States $25 billion in the first two months.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Facing questions from ranking member Rep. Adam Smith (D-Wash.), Acting Defense Department comptroller Jules Hurst testified that most of the cost was \u201cin munitions\u201d plus \u201c[operations and maintenance] and equipment replacement.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Smith thanked the Pentagon official for offering the most specific cost estimate since its first week, when Hurst said the price tag was\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2026\/03\/12\/iran-war-cost-pentagon-00825666\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\"><u>roughly<\/u><\/a>\u00a0$11 billion. <strong>\u201cI\u2019m glad you answered that question because we\u2019ve been asking for a hell of a long time and no one has given us the number.\u201d<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><a data-image-external-href=\"\" data-image-href=\"\/s3\/files\/inline-images\/hegsthcne.jpg?itok=Bbu41nhR\" data-link-option=\"0\" href=\"https:\/\/cms.zerohedge.com\/s3\/files\/inline-images\/hegsthcne.jpg?itok=Bbu41nhR\"><\/a><\/p>\n<figure role=\"group\" class=\"caption caption-img inline-images image-style-inline-images\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" data-entity-type=\"file\" data-entity-uuid=\"91e1df66-3714-4793-8b68-1b5a48965f31\" data-responsive-image-style=\"inline_images\" height=\"335\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.zerohedge.com\/s3fs-public\/styles\/inline_image_mobile\/public\/inline-images\/hegsthcne.jpg?itok=Bbu41nhR\" width=\"500\" \/><figcaption><em>via Reuters<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>However, the $25BN number immediately raised questions among skeptics, both within Congress and among media pundits, over whether this is a lowball number.<\/p>\n<p>According to <a href=\"https:\/\/responsiblestatecraft.org\/cost-of-war-iran\/\">Responsible Statecraft<\/a>:\u00a0<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><em>Rep. Ro Khanna pushed back on Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth\u2019s assertion that the supplemental would only include $25 million for the mission in Iran specifically. \u201cYou\u2019re saying $25 billion. If you come back and want to revise those numbers, <strong>because all the experts are disagreeing with you when it comes to today\u2019s dollars in damage<\/strong>,\u201d Khanna said.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Also <em>Reuters<\/em> has noted,<em>\u00a0&#8220;<\/em>But it is unclear how the Pentagon arrived at the $25 billion amount given that a source had told Reuters last month that President Donald Trump&#8217;s administration estimated that <strong>the first six days of the war had cost the United States at \u200bleast\u00a0<\/strong><a data-testid=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/us\/trump-administration-estimates-iran-war-cost-over-11-billion-six-days-source-2026-03-11\/\"><strong>$11.3 billion<\/strong>.<\/a>&#8220;<\/p>\n<p>The case for skepticism is further fueled by the fact that the US military has lost so many expensive radar systems and aircraft throughout the war.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Iran\u2019s missiles and drones, and one devastating instance of so-called friendly fire, have <strong>destroyed US military equipment worth between $2.3bn and $2.8bn<\/strong>, the Washington, DC-based Center for Strategic and International Studies has calculated,&#8221; one <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2026\/4\/30\/25bn-or-1-trillion-how-much-has-iran-war-really-cost-the-us\">report<\/a> has underscored.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\" xml:lang=\"en\">U.S. officials say the Iran war has likely cost closer to $50 billion\u2014about double the $25 billion publicly cited by the Pentagon.<\/p>\n<p>The lower figure excluded major expenses like destroyed equipment and damaged bases.<\/p>\n<p>Much of the added cost comes from replacing lost munitions\u2026<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Clash Report (@clashreport) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/clashreport\/status\/2049939371626041550?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">April 30, 2026<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>But like with the Iraq and Afghan wars before, the true cost in both blood and treasure might not be known or fully assessed even for years to come.
