I am confident in her commitment to implement the difficult changes needed to reform the jail,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/s.w.org\/images\/core\/emoji\/17.0.2\/72x72\/1f6a8.png\" alt=\"\ud83d\udea8\" class=\"wp-smiley\" \/><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/s.w.org\/images\/core\/emoji\/17.0.2\/72x72\/1f6a8.png\" alt=\"\ud83d\udea8\" class=\"wp-smiley\" \/><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/s.w.org\/images\/core\/emoji\/17.0.2\/72x72\/1f6a8.png\" alt=\"\ud83d\udea8\" class=\"wp-smiley\" \/>BREAKING: Orleans Parish Sheriff, Chief Financial Officer Indicted for Roles in One of the Largest Jailbreaks in the Nation\u2019s History<\/p>\n<p>Nearly a year ago, I made a commitment to the people of New Orleans and the people of our state that those responsible for the Orleans\u2026 <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/JswpBcRnic\">pic.twitter.com\/JswpBcRnic<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Attorney General Liz Murrill (@AGLizMurrill) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/AGLizMurrill\/status\/2049591540297973958?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">April 29, 2026<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2026\/04\/29\/us\/louisiana-inmate-escape-orleans-sheriff-indicted\">CNN<\/a>, a $300,000 bond has been set for Hutson, and a $200,000 bond has been set for Brown.<\/p>\n<p>Hutson has long maintained that the jailbreak was an inside job, and indeed, one jail staffer has been arrested.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere were procedural failures and missed notifications, but there were also intentional wrongdoings,\u201d she said last year. \u201cThis was a coordinated effort aided by individuals inside our own agency who made the choice to break the law.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne arrest has been made, and we are continuing to pursue everyone involved, and that investigation is active and ongoing,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n<p>Also, during a city council meeting last year, she complained that the Orleans Justice Center was operating with \u201coutdated surveillance, aging infrastructure, blind spots in supervision, and critical staffing shortages.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In response, Louisiana Gov. Jeff Landry ordered the Louisiana Department of Public Safety and Corrections to perform <a href=\"https:\/\/gov.louisiana.gov\/assets\/ExecutiveOrders\/2025\/Jailbreak-EO.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">an audit<\/a> of the jail\u2019s conditions.<\/p>\n<p>Hutson is still on the job but is set to be replaced soon by Sheriff-elect Michelle Woodfork.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI ran for Sheriff to bring a new era of leadership and accountability, and on Election Night, the people of New Orleans chose a new direction for this office,\u201d she said in a statement following Hutson\u2019s indictment, according to station <a href=\"https:\/\/wgno.com\/news\/louisiana\/orleans-parish\/outgoing-orleans-parish-sheriff-susan-hutson-indicted-on-30-felony-counts\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">WGNO<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSince then, my team has been working diligently to ensure we are ready to lead effectively from day one. This Monday, I will assume leadership of the Sheriff\u2019s Office with a firm commitment to accountability, transparency, and integrity,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n<p>Local attorney Dane Ciolino told the station he was surprised by Hutson\u2019s indictment.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat the attorney general is alleging is that the sheriff committed intentional malfeasance in office. That is, she intentionally refused or failed to perform her public duties as a public officer,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn the first reading of this, it appears to me that this is a sheriff that may have been asleep at the wheel, but does that amount to an intentional criminal act? I don\u2019t know, because we don\u2019t have the facts yet, and the attorney general hasn\u2019t released those facts. She did say that this is an ongoing investigation.
