At a White House state dinner on Tuesday, King Charles III gifted President Donald Trump a brass bell from a submarine named the HMS Trump that sank several Japanese ships during World War II.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m delighted to present to you the original bell which hung on the conning tower of your valiant namesake,\u201d King Charles told Trump. \u201cMay it stand as a testimony to our nation\u2019s shared history and shining future. According to the U.K. Metro<\/a>, the HMS Trump \u201cserved as a Royal Navy submarine in World War II in the Pacific.\u201d As for the submarine\u2019s name, it was reportedly based on \u201cno one in particular.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIn the 1940s, most Royal Navy vessels were named with short \u2018T\u2019 names, including HMS Tiptoe, Truncheon and more,\u201d the Metro notes.<\/p>\n

King Charles also gave the president a framed replica of the 1879 design plans for the Resolute Desk, which was reportedly made from the timbers of a British exploration ship known as the HMS Resolute.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe ship was refitted and recovered by the US government before being sent back to England and presented to Queen Victoria in December 1856 as a gesture of goodwill and friendship between the two countries,\u201d according to the Metro.<\/p>\n

\u201cAfter serving in the Royal Navy until 1879, the ship\u2019s timbers were used to make three desks in Kent, England. Queen Victoria then presented the finished Resolute Desk to then-US President Rutherford B Hayes in 1880,\u201d the reporting continued.<\/p>\n

President Trump, in turn, gave King Charles a custom replica of a letter written by former President John Adams to fellow Founding Father John Jay in 1785.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn the letter, Adams describes King George III receiving him as the first US ambassador to Great Britain at St James Palace in London,\u201d according to the Metro. \u201cMr Adams wrote about the emotions of the encounter as the pair met face to face, and that the King had said, although he was the \u2018last to consent to the separation\u2019, he would be first to meet US friendship.\u201d<\/p>\n

In return, President Trump presented the King with a custom facsimile of a 1785 letter from John Adams to John Jay.<\/p>\n

And finally, Queen Camilla gave First Lady Melania Trump a brooch designed by Fiona Rae, and the first lady gave the queen six Tiffany\u2019s English King sterling silver teaspoons and some White House honey.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe teaspoons are each engraved with Camilla\u2019s cypher and are Tiffany\u2019s interpretation of the King designs that were popular in England and America in the late 19th century,\u201d the Metro notes. \u201cMeanwhile, the honey is a nod to the Queen\u2019s interest in beekeeping and the pair\u2019s shared appreciation of sustainability, nature, and craftsmanship.\u201d<\/p>\n

Earlier in the day, King Charles delivered a speech to Congress in which he began by vowing solidarity with the American people in the wake of the shooting over the weekend at the White House Correspondents\u2019 Dinner.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe stand united in our commitment to uphold democracy, to protect all our people from harm, and to salute the courage of those who daily risk their lives in the service of our countries,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
