{"id":593042,"date":"2026-04-29T08:15:00","date_gmt":"2026-04-29T08:15:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/buglecall.org\/?p=593042"},"modified":"2026-04-29T08:15:00","modified_gmt":"2026-04-29T08:15:00","slug":"nato-mulls-nixing-annual-summits-wary-of-trump-drama-overshadowing-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/buglecall.org\/?p=593042","title":{"rendered":"NATO Mulls Nixing Annual Summits, Wary Of &#8216;Trump Drama&#8217; Overshadowing"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span class=\"field field--name-title field--type-string field--label-hidden\">NATO Mulls Nixing Annual Summits, Wary Of &#8216;Trump Drama&#8217; Overshadowing<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"clearfix text-formatted field field--name-body field--type-text-with-summary field--label-hidden field__item\">\n<p>Fresh reporting in <em>Reuters<\/em> says that NATO leadership is mulling ending its practice of holding annual summits as the Trump presidency has <strong>&#8220;cast a long shadow&#8221;<\/strong> over such meetings and as member states are looking for &#8220;less drama&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>For example, at the 2018 summit Trump threatened to walk \u2060out after bitterly complaining over allies&#8217; low defense spending.\u00a0Jens Stoltenberg, NATO\u2019s secretary general at the time, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/bruised-by-trump-nato-alliance-considers-end-annual-summits-2026-04-27\/\">wrote<\/a> in a recently published memoir, &#8220;Had he made good on his threat to leave \u200bin protest, <strong>we would have been left to pick up the pieces of a shattered NATO<\/strong>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a data-image-external-href=\"\" data-image-href=\"\/s3\/files\/inline-images\/trumpnatodrama.jpg?itok=RvkDH0ga\" data-link-option=\"0\" href=\"https:\/\/cms.zerohedge.com\/s3\/files\/inline-images\/trumpnatodrama.jpg?itok=RvkDH0ga\"><\/a><\/p>\n<figure role=\"group\" class=\"caption caption-img inline-images image-style-inline-images\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" data-entity-type=\"file\" data-entity-uuid=\"756502b9-4e74-468a-9498-b41395127f3c\" data-responsive-image-style=\"inline_images\" height=\"333\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.zerohedge.com\/s3fs-public\/styles\/inline_image_mobile\/public\/inline-images\/trumpnatodrama.jpg?itok=RvkDH0ga\" width=\"500\" \/><figcaption><em>via Associated Press<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>Also, in 2019 he exited summit early while lambasting then-Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau as &#8220;two-faced&#8221;\u00a0after Trudeau was caught on a hot mike blasting Trump&#8217;s behavior.<\/p>\n<p>One report recalls of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2019\/dec\/04\/trump-describes-trudeau-as-two-faced-over-nato-hot-mic-video\">scene<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><em>Footage emerged late on Tuesday that appears to show\u00a0<a data-link-name=\"in body link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/video\/2019\/dec\/04\/johnson-trudeau-and-macron-appear-to-joke-about-trump-at-nato-summit-video\">world leaders joking about Trump at the summit<\/a>, which has been marked by sharp disagreements over spending and future threats, including Turkey\u2019s role in the alliance and China, as well as a clash of personalities that triggered a flurry of incendiary language being deployed by leaders.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>The video shows leaders including <strong>Trudeau, Johnson, the French president, Emmanuel Macron, the Dutch prime minister, Mark Rutte, and Princess Anne<\/strong> at the Buckingham Palace event on Tuesday evening.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>In audio caught on a nearby microphone, Johnson asks Macron: <strong>\u201cIs that why he was late?\u201d before Trudeau interjects: \u201cHe was late because he takes a 40-minute press conference off the top.\u201d<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Trudeau adds: \u201cOh, yeah, yeah yeah. He announced \u2026 \u201d before he is cut off by Macron, who speaks animatedly to the group. Macron\u2019s back is to the camera and his words are inaudible.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>After an edited cut in the film, the footage later shows an incredulous Trudeau telling the group: <strong>\u201cYou just watched his team\u2019s jaws drop to the floor.\u201d<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>In his second administration, President Trump&#8217;s fierce criticisms have only grown, especially related to lack of help in the Iran war and Hormuz Strait crisis,\u00a0labeling the alliance a <strong>&#8220;paper tiger&#8221; and charging member states with being &#8220;free-loaders&#8221;.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>One European diplomat expressed an increasingly common viewpoint among members:<strong> &#8220;Better to have fewer summits than bad summits,&#8221;<\/strong> the official said.<\/p>\n<p>And, per Reuters: &#8220;Some diplomats and analysts have long argued that annual summits <strong>create pressure for eye-catching results<\/strong> that distracts from longer-term planning.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><em>The 2019 Trudeau hot mic incident:<\/em><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-media-max-width=\"560\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\" xml:lang=\"en\">.<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/JustinTrudeau?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@JustinTrudeau<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/EmmanuelMacron?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@EmmanuelMacron<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/BorisJohnson?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@BorisJohnson<\/a> and other VIPs shared a few words at a Buckingham Palace reception Tuesday. No one mentions <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/realDonaldTrump?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@realDonaldTrump<\/a> by name, but they seem to be discussing his lengthy impromptu press conferences from earlier in the day.
