The senators touted the legislation as a common-sense solution, while some reactions on social media questioned lawmakers’ priorities.

“America’s best (and delicious) affordability play is Costco’s $4.99 rotisserie chicken,” U.S. Senator John Fetterman (D-PA) said in a statement.

“It’s one of my family’s favorites, and I’m proud to join this bill with Senator Justice for all to try. SNAP funds would be well spent to feed our nation’s families who need it,” added the Pennsylvania Democrat who is a member of the U.S. Senate Committee on Agriculture.

Fetterman joined Sens. Jim Justice (R-WV), Shelley Moore Capito (R-WV), and Michael Bennet (D-CO) in proposing the amendment to the 2008 Food and Nutrition Act.

It’s plain common sense: a hot rotisserie chicken is a healthy, easy meal for busy families. Folks on SNAP should be able to grab one on the go.

That’s why @SenFettermanPA, @SenCapito, @SenatorBennet, and I introduced the Hot Rotisserie Chicken Act.

— Senator Jim Justice (@JimJustice_WV) April 22, 2026

“Allowing folks on SNAP to buy hot rotisserie chickens is truly just commonsense. It’s as basic as you can get to help busy parents or grandparents put something as simple as this on the table to feed their families. We have to give people the option to put a healthy, protein-dense choice on the table that actually tastes good and doesn’t take an hour and a half to cook,” Sen. Justice said in a statement.

“Congress should be making it easier, not harder, for families to put food on the table. This bill fixes an unnecessary barrier and helps Colorado families get a quick, nutritious meal when they need it,” Sen. Bennet said.

The Food and Nutrition Act of 2008 would be modified with the amendment to the definition of food by adding “hot rotisserie chicken,” according to a joint statement from Fetterman’s office. The bill will not include restaurants, only eligible retailers, and will “not increase funding or participant eligibility for SNAP or allow all hot foods to be included for purchase.”

“The HOT Rotisserie Chicken Act is a commonsense solution to an unnecessary problem. Right now, a SNAP family can buy a cold rotisserie chicken — but the moment it’s hot, it’s off limits. There is no nutritional difference. There is no logical difference. There is only an outdated technicality that forces grocery stores to heat chickens and cool them back down just to comply, wasting energy, degrading quality, and adding cost,” Harrison Kircher, President and CEO of the National Chicken Council, said in a statement.

While many social media users applauded the proposal, there were many other comments on X slamming the focus of lawmakers.

But, by all means—- ignore the SAVE Act, and place your priorities on the Hot Rotisserie Chicken Act.
