{"id":590700,"date":"2026-04-23T09:00:00","date_gmt":"2026-04-23T09:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/buglecall.org\/?p=590700"},"modified":"2026-04-23T09:00:00","modified_gmt":"2026-04-23T09:00:00","slug":"uk-high-court-backs-facial-recognition-rollout","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/buglecall.org\/?p=590700","title":{"rendered":"UK High Court Backs Facial Recognition Rollout"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span class=\"field field--name-title field--type-string field--label-hidden\">UK High Court Backs Facial Recognition Rollout<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"clearfix text-formatted field field--name-body field--type-text-with-summary field--label-hidden field__item\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/off-guardian.org\/2026\/04\/22\/quick-take-uk-high-court-backs-facial-recognition-rollout\/\"><em>Authored by Kit Knightly via OffGuardian.org,<\/em><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Yesterday evening, the UK\u2019s High Court ruled in favour of the Metropolitan Police in a legal challenge pertaining to the use of Live Facial Recognition Technology (LFR) across London\u2019s transport network.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The case had been brought by Silkie Carlo of Big Brother Watch and Shaun Thompson, a youth worker who was previously misidentified by the technology,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/news.sky.com\/story\/facial-recognition-to-be-rolled-out-across-uk-after-human-rights-challenge-fails-13534598\"><em>\u201cover concerns it could be used arbitrarily or in a discriminatory way\u201d<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Specifically, their lawyers argued that the current powers claimed by police governing the use of LFR would breach articles 8, 10 &amp; 11 of the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR),<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a data-image-external-href=\"\" data-image-href=\"\/s3\/files\/inline-images\/adobe-stock-technology-AI-facial.jpg?itok=phlgNSUj\" data-link-option=\"0\" href=\"https:\/\/cms.zerohedge.com\/s3\/files\/inline-images\/adobe-stock-technology-AI-facial.jpg?itok=phlgNSUj\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" data-entity-type=\"file\" data-entity-uuid=\"8939b76b-9f07-4e15-9436-45c01c4b6d6e\" data-responsive-image-style=\"inline_images\" height=\"150\" width=\"500\" class=\"inline-images image-style-inline-images\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.zerohedge.com\/s3fs-public\/styles\/inline_image_mobile\/public\/inline-images\/adobe-stock-technology-AI-facial.jpg?itok=phlgNSUj\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>But the High Court judges said \u201cnah\u201d, and dismissed the challenge in favour of the police.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Shocking, right?<\/p>\n<p><strong>The establishment judges voted in favour of the establishment cops using technology to violate people\u2019s rights in the name of protecting the establishment.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u2018Cause for a second there we didn\u2019t know which way that might go.<\/p>\n<p>The failure of this legal challenge will open the door for a national rollout of FTR across high streets and transport hubs up and down the country.<\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s a good, technical breakdown of the legal proceedings\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.localgovernmentlawyer.co.uk\/community-safety\/393-community-safety-news\/100296-high-court-upholds-metropolitan-police-live-facial-recognition-policy\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The claimants have already stated they plan to appeal the ruling.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Personally, I question the decision to base the case on protecting the innocent from \u201cerrors\u201d in the LFR tech, rather than the question of the right to privacy as a general principle, but I\u2019m not a lawyer\u2026and they were probably going to lose whatever they said.<\/p>\n<p><strong>All in all, it\u2019s just another example of the increasing normalization of authoritarianism in the UK.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The UK Parliament has just passed a law banning smoking for everyone born after January 1st 2009, meaning the legal age of smoking will increase by one year every year until the last smokers die off.<\/p>\n<p>Some will say \u201cthat\u2019s good, tobacco is poison\u201d, but I will always argue that people have the right to live as wisely or foolishly as they want, as long as they are not hurting other people.<\/p>\n<p><strong>And I don\u2019t trust any government empowered to protect me \u201cfor my own good.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Oh, and the British schools are going to be made to ban smartphones, too.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s all getting very claustrophobic in the UK right now.<\/p>\n<p><strong>But, in totally unrelated news, black balaclavas are relatively inexpensive and can be purchased from most major clothing retailers.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Consider stocking up, until they\u2019re illegal too.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>      <span class=\"field field--name-uid field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden\"><a title=\"View user profile.\" href=\"https:\/\/cms.zerohedge.com\/users\/tyler-durden\" lang=\"\" class=\"username\" xml:lang=\"\">Tyler Durden<\/a><\/span><br \/>\n<span class=\"field field--name-created field--type-created field--label-hidden\">Thu, 04\/23\/2026 &#8211;
