{"id":590085,"date":"2026-04-22T04:05:29","date_gmt":"2026-04-22T04:05:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/buglecall.org\/?p=590085"},"modified":"2026-04-22T04:05:29","modified_gmt":"2026-04-22T04:05:29","slug":"ukraine-billionaire-spends-554-million-for-worlds-most-expensive-apartment-in-monte-carlo","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/buglecall.org\/?p=590085","title":{"rendered":"Ukraine Billionaire Spends $554 Million For World&#8217;s Most Expensive Apartment In Monte Carlo"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span class=\"field field--name-title field--type-string field--label-hidden\">Ukraine Billionaire Spends $554 Million For World&#8217;s Most Expensive Apartment In Monte Carlo<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"clearfix text-formatted field field--name-body field--type-text-with-summary field--label-hidden field__item\">\n<p>It makes sense that a nation which has consistently ranked at the top in all global corruption rankings, produces some of the most extravagant demonstrations of stolen wealth.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Take billionaire\u00a0Rinat Akhmetov, among many other assets\u00a0owner of the Azovstal steel complex in Mariupol which became one of the defining clashes in the Ukraine war, and Ukraine\u2019s richest man, who bought a <strong>vast, five-floor luxury apartment in Monaco\u2019s most prestigious new development for an eye-popping \u20ac471 million ($554 million), <\/strong>making it the biggest single home transactions in history according to Bloomberg.<\/p>\n<p>The 21-room waterfront property, acquired by the businessman\u2019s holding company, is located in the principality\u2019s\u00a0Mareterra\u00a0district. The new area, built on reclaimed land, was inaugurated by\u00a0Prince Albert II\u00a0in 2024 and has drawn ultra-rich investors from around the world.<\/p>\n<p><a data-image-external-href=\"\" data-image-href=\"https:\/\/assets.zerohedge.com\/s3fs-public\/inline-images\/most%20expensive%20apartment.jpg?itok=xiMxWh6D\" data-link-option=\"0\" href=\"https:\/\/assets.zerohedge.com\/s3fs-public\/inline-images\/most%20expensive%20apartment.jpg?itok=xiMxWh6D\"><\/a><\/p>\n<figure role=\"group\" class=\"caption caption-img inline-images image-style-inline-images\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" data-entity-type=\"file\" data-entity-uuid=\"58d008c5-480e-4a44-a7d8-6216efbbc648\" data-responsive-image-style=\"inline_images\" height=\"300\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.zerohedge.com\/s3fs-public\/styles\/inline_image_mobile\/public\/inline-images\/most%20expensive%20apartment.jpg?itok=xiMxWh6D\" width=\"500\" \/><figcaption><em>Le Renzo in Mareterra, Monte Carlo<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>Situated in the flagship \u201cLe Renzo\u201d building, the apartment stretches over about 2,500 square meters (27,000 square feet), not counting balconies and terraces looking out over the Mediterranean Sea. It also has a private swimming pool, jacuzzi and comes with at least eight parking spots.<\/p>\n<p>Details of the sale, which was finalized in 2024, or about two years after Akhmetov&#8217;s country was deep in a brutal war with thousands of his countrymen dying on the front every day, come from the principality\u2019s property records, as well as a stash of emails and preliminary deeds reviewed by Bloomberg Businessweek from Distributed Denial of Secrets, a nonprofit that preserves hacked and leaked materials believed to be in the public interest.<\/p>\n<p>Akhmetov\u2019s holding company,\u00a0System Capital Management, or SCM, <strong>confirmed it it had made an acquisition in the development, though declined to provide details about the property or price.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cSCM\u2019s international investment portfolio has included a standalone premium real estate portfolio for over ten years, as has been publicly stated on multiple occasions,\u201d it said in a statement. \u201cAmong its assets is the \u2018Le Renzo\u2019 project, in which we made an investment on the primary market in 2021.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Premium real estate; half a billion dollars for an apartment is a different galaxy, especially sine most of the money was likely sourced from US taxpayers.\u00a0<strong>The reported price would make it the biggest known home sale in history, <\/strong>outstripping the recent sale of developer Nick Candy\u2019s Chelsea mansion for more than $350 million or the sale of a New York penthouse apartment to hedge fund manager Ken Griffin for about $240 million.<\/p>\n<p>Perched on a rocky outcrop between France and Italy, Monaco has long been the priciest real-estate market in the world because of its small size and tax haven status. The Mareterra development was built up over a decade on land reclaimed from the sea and includes 114 luxury villas, townhouses and apartments set around gardens, a harbor and public promenade.<\/p>\n<p>Akhmetov\u2019s purchase agreement in the principality came just before Russia\u2019s invasion of Ukraine in 2022. The war subsequently created upheaval within his business empire including\u00a0attacks\u00a0on energy assets in his home country.<\/p>\n<p><a data-image-external-href=\"\" data-image-href=\"\/s3\/files\/inline-images\/rinat%20ahmetov.jpg?itok=4_rM095a\" data-link-option=\"0\" href=\"https:\/\/cms.zerohedge.com\/s3\/files\/inline-images\/rinat%20ahmetov.jpg?itok=4_rM095a\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-entity-type=\"file\" data-entity-uuid=\"bad7adea-81ac-477e-bd47-debda69c00d0\" data-responsive-image-style=\"inline_images\" height=\"275\" width=\"500\" class=\"inline-images image-style-inline-images\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.zerohedge.com\/s3fs-public\/styles\/inline_image_mobile\/public\/inline-images\/rinat%20ahmetov.jpg?itok=4_rM095a\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Akhmetov was pivotal in arranging a lasting relationship <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zerohedge.com\/l\">between his employee <\/a>and close friend Paul Manafort and former Ukraine president Viktor Yanukovich, whose US-mediated ouster was the trigger for the eventual war between Ukraine and Russia.<\/p>\n<p>The tycoon has a net worth of more than $7 billion, according to the\u00a0Bloomberg Billionaires Index. His fortune is rooted in SCM, Ukraine\u2019s largest industrial conglomerate with investments in metallurgy, mining and energy, in addition to property.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Akhmetov has also been associated with a string of other ultra high-end property acquisitions in the past, including the 2019 purchase for \u20ac200 million of the\u00a0historic\u00a0Villa Les C\u00e8dres on the French Riviera. The sprawling estate in the exclusive Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat was once owned by King Leopold II of Belgium.\u00a0\u00a0In 2011, Akhmetov also reportedly bought a penthouse in London\u2019s prestigious One Hyde Park development opposite the Harrods department store in Knightsbridge.<\/p>\n<p>Mareterra properties have sold for prices surpassing the symbolic \u20ac100,000 a square meter, according to local property agents, who asked not to be named because the details aren\u2019t public. <strong>One three-bedroom property is currently on the market for about \u20ac76 million. There are also rental listings for four and five-room apartments for \u20ac150,000 a month. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><a data-image-external-href=\"\" data-image-href=\"\/s3\/files\/inline-images\/monaco%20property%20prices.jpg?itok=K5rqOPvY\" data-link-option=\"0\" href=\"https:\/\/cms.zerohedge.com\/s3\/files\/inline-images\/monaco%20property%20prices.jpg?itok=K5rqOPvY\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-entity-type=\"file\" data-entity-uuid=\"34d4c5b0-ace3-4df0-b099-1a5be9bd5613\" data-responsive-image-style=\"inline_images\" height=\"336\" width=\"500\" class=\"inline-images image-style-inline-images\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.zerohedge.com\/s3fs-public\/styles\/inline_image_mobile\/public\/inline-images\/monaco%20property%20prices.jpg?itok=K5rqOPvY\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Official statistics show that the Larvotto district where Mareterra is located has become the principality\u2019s most expensive in terms of estimated selling prices per square meter.
