{"id":590052,"date":"2026-04-22T01:45:00","date_gmt":"2026-04-22T01:45:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/buglecall.org\/?p=590052"},"modified":"2026-04-22T01:45:00","modified_gmt":"2026-04-22T01:45:00","slug":"us-philippines-launch-their-biggest-ever-balikatan-drills-with-large-japanese-contingent-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/buglecall.org\/?p=590052","title":{"rendered":"US, Philippines Launch Their &#8216;Biggest Ever&#8217; Balikatan Drills With Large Japanese Contingent"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span class=\"field field--name-title field--type-string field--label-hidden\">US, Philippines Launch Their &#8216;Biggest Ever&#8217; Balikatan Drills With Large Japanese Contingent<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"clearfix text-formatted field field--name-body field--type-text-with-summary field--label-hidden field__item\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/news.antiwar.com\/2026\/04\/20\/us-and-philippines-launch-their-biggest-ever-balikatan-drills-with-large-japanese-contingent-for-first-time\/\"><em>Authored by Dave DeCamp via AntiWar.com,<\/em><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The US and the Philippines on Monday\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/thedefensepost.com\/2026\/04\/20\/us-philippines-war-games-2026\/\">launched<\/a>\u00a0what\u2019s being billed as the &#8220;biggest ever&#8221; Balikatan Exercise, an annual military drill that, <strong>for the first time, includes a significant contingent of Japanese troops as Tokyo increases its military activity in the region<\/strong>, ramping up <strong>tensions with China<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The drills are scheduled to take place from April 20 to May 8 and will involve more than 17,000 troops, including about <strong>1,400 Japanese military personnel<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><a data-image-external-href=\"\" data-image-href=\"\/s3\/files\/inline-images\/Balikitan-opener1.jpg?itok=NL-Eelf1\" data-link-option=\"0\" href=\"https:\/\/cms.zerohedge.com\/s3\/files\/inline-images\/Balikitan-opener1.jpg?itok=NL-Eelf1\"><\/a><\/p>\n<figure role=\"group\" class=\"caption caption-img inline-images image-style-inline-images\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" data-entity-type=\"file\" data-entity-uuid=\"cd0197dc-ef6c-495c-b863-b6394090b4a6\" data-responsive-image-style=\"inline_images\" height=\"334\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.zerohedge.com\/s3fs-public\/styles\/inline_image_mobile\/public\/inline-images\/Balikitan-opener1.jpg?itok=NL-Eelf1\" width=\"500\" \/><figcaption><em>US Army photo<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>Importantly, exercises will include <strong>live-fire drills in the northern Philippines, facing Taiwan, and in Palawan, an island province facing the disputed South China Sea<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The start of the drills comes amid a very fragile ceasefire between the US and Iran, which is due to expire on Wednesday if it\u2019s not extended.<\/p>\n<p>While the US has <strong>committed more than 60,000 troops to the Middle East<\/strong>, the Trump administration continues to focus on building alliances in the Asia-Pacific as part of its strategy against China, including a new security deal with Indonesia.<\/p>\n<p>In response to the start of the Balikitan drills, the Chinese Foreign Ministry\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fmprc.gov.cn\/eng\/xw\/fyrbt\/lxjzh\/202604\/t20260420_11895636.html\">strongly condemned<\/a>\u00a0the US activity in the region.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The world has seen enough damage done by unilateralism and abuse of military might. Such cooperation should not target any third party or harm the interests of any third party.
