NewMexit: Secession In The Southwest?<\/span><\/p>\n

Lea and Roosevelt counties in the US state of New Mexico (NM) in 2026 are seeking\u00a0to secede<\/a>\u00a0and join the state of Texas.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cThere was a state representative or two from New Mexico who were expressing frustration with the government in Santa Fe,\u201d Texas State Representative\u00a0Carl Tepper<\/a>\u00a0said. <\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cThey have expressed an interest in being annexed by Texas, . . .\u201d <\/em><\/p>\n

Their action is referred to as \u201cNewMexit.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

Ludwig von Mises wrote many times that a group of people in a sovereign nation or province should have the freedom to secede from that place to join another like-minded province or nation or become an independent nation.<\/p>\n

These two counties are part of a growing US movement where people in counties tire of their state\u2019s policies and taxation that inhibit economic growth, lessen individual freedom, issue cumbersome regulations interfering with operation of a privately-owned business<\/strong> and family decision-making.<\/p>\n

\u201cRepublican\u00a0New Mexico lawmakers<\/a>\u00a0have floated the idea of allowing counties to secede from the state to either join another state or create a new state in the United States.\u201d <\/strong><\/p>\n

Former New Mexico Republican state\u00a0Sen. Cliff R. Pirtle<\/a>\u00a0of Chaves, Eddy, and Otero counties introduced\u00a0Senate Joint Resolution 15<\/a>\u00a0in 2021 to amend the state constitution. The resolution died in committee.<\/p>\n

According<\/a>\u00a0to one source, \u201cOn Jan. 26, 2026, New Mexico Republican state Reps.\u00a0Randall Pettigrew<\/a>\u00a0of Lea County and\u00a0Jimmy Mason<\/a>\u00a0of Chaves, Eddy and Lea counties tried to revive the secession path for the state\u2019s counties. The representatives introduced\u00a0House Joint Resolution 10<\/a>.\u201d <\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

But \u201c. . .the resolution<\/a>\u00a0died as it was \u2018postponed indefinitely\u2019 in the state\u2019s legislature, which gaveled out of session in mid-February.\u201d<\/p>\n

The US Census estimated 2025 population for\u00a0Lea County<\/a>\u00a0is about 75,000 and the\u00a0Roosevelt County<\/a>\u00a0estimated 2025 population is about 19,000.<\/strong> The estimated\u00a0NM state population<\/a>\u00a0is about 2.1 million so losing both counties is 4.5 percent of the state\u2019s population.<\/p>\n
